The Home Office has apologised to around 100 EU citizens living in the UK after it mistakenly sent them letters ordering them to leave the country or face being deported.

Officials from the Home Office spent yesterday phoning those who had been sent the letters to say sorry to them and to explain that it had been an unfortunate error.

EU nationals have a right to live in Britain under freedom of movement rules, and although that right will end for new arrivals after Brexit, a Home Office spokesman said the error had not been caused by anything related to Britain’s withdrawal from Europe.

The spokesman said: “We have been urgently looking into why this happened.”

Theresa May echoed a Home Office statement in saying the rights of EU nationals living in the UK remain unchanged.
